New York City’s development, its history, its origin as a Dutch trading post, position in colonial culture and society, role in the American Revolution and the founding of the American Republic, growth as a great commercial, transportation, manufacturing, and banking center, citizens’ attitude toward slavery and race relations, importance as the center of immigration, growth and expansion into neighboring communities, and its problems and difficulties as a modern megalopolis.
